Studying abroad is an exciting experience for anyone who has dreamed of seeing the world and learning about new cultures. Learning a new language is empowering and, in many cases, brings you a step closer to achieving your personal and professional goals. Not surprisingly, there are numerous ESL programs in the USA to choose from, but which one is best for your needs?
According to data shared by the Migration Policy Institute, in 2015, the population of international students in the USA reached a total of 975,000. Each student has different expectations and learning objectives, so, how to choose an ESL program that won’t disappoint?
What to Look for in an ESL School
#1 Check for Accreditation
Education is a serious matter and any institute receiving international students must be evaluated to offer ESL programs. In our case, we’re accredited by CEA – Commission on English Language Program Accreditation. Always check for those credentials to make sure the school is up to the highest academic standards.
These accreditations evaluate every aspect of an ESL school, from the teachers to the enrollment process. It’s a resource to have the peace of mind of choosing a quality program.
#2 Research About Student Resources and Materials
We’re not only talking about books, but also about classroom resources like printed and digital materials, boards, and internet access. We’ve found the Smartboards to be extremely useful because teachers can email their classroom notes to students and students can use it as a studying technique.
Other great assets to look for: computer labs, libraries, audiovisual material, and student lounges.
#3 Consider the School Location
Yes, your main goal is to learn English, but this might be a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore the city you’ve chosen. Is the school in a central location? Is it accessible by public transport or will you need a car? What is there to do in your spare time? These are basic questions you need to ask, not only for daily logistics purposes, but also to make the most of your free time instead of sitting in traffic every day.
Take your time to do some research and decide where you want to go and during what time of the year. Consider the weather, cost of living, lifestyle, and local events when choosing your destination.
At all Harvest campuses, classes run Monday to Thursday to make sure students get enough time to enjoy the city during their stay.
#4 Ask About the Student Population
Regardless of your length of stay, you need to feel comfortable in your school to really make the most of your ESL program. Being an international student in the US is a great opportunity to meet people from all over the world and learn from them. Across our campuses, we welcome students from over 40 nationalities, 14 years old and up. We welcome everyone and promote an inclusive environment, so if you are up for an educational experience that embraces cultural diversity, Harvest is the place for you!
#5 Consider Further Education Opportunities
While some ESL students complete their courses and return home, others see ESL programs in USA as the first step on a path towards higher education. Colleges and universities ask for a TOEFL score to make sure students meet the minimum language requirements for enrollment.
To ease this transition, we’ve partnered with 14 universities that waive the TOEFL requirement for Harvest students after completing level 5. This is a testament of how intensive and well-structured our program is.
Our partner universities are:
- University of Central Florida
- University of Kansas
- University of Illinois Chicago
- Florida International University
- Drew University
- Auburn University
- Louisiana State University
- University of South Carolina
- Adelphi University
- The American University – Washington DC
- University of the Pacific
- Herzing University (11 campuses)
- Full Sail University
- Berkeley College
