- Take a deep breath- Congrats, you signed up for an English course! You took the first step and are on the way to becoming fluent. You’re awesome! You got this!
- Environment- English is all around you. On your way to class, listen to English music or a podcast. Start to train your mind and ears to hear so that you’ll become familiar with the language.
- Bring chocolate or a treat- Eat chocolate, a mint, or piece of candy- this releases endorphins which will calm you down.
- Participate- Speak in the class, but of course in English. If you don’t speak, you will learn much slower.
- Ask Questions- Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It is essential for your learning and growth. Let your teacher know when you don’t understand. Your teacher wants to help you!
- Be Proactive -Discuss with your teacher what skills you would like to improve. There are four skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking). Figure out what your strengths are and what skills can be enhanced.
- Be Present- When you’re in the class be fully present. That means no cellphone, speaking another language, and disrupting the class.
- Be Prepared – Bring your books and an open mind. Make sure you do any homework when you go home that night so you can ask questions the next day!
- Set Goals- Remember why you’re there. Set reasonable goals and steps to achieve your learning.
- Celebrate! – See tip number 3—Yes! More Chocolate. You completed your first day, and that should be celebrated!
Growth is a process—not a straight line. Yes, some days will be tough, but that’s ok! Just keep going. Making mistakes is ok! Keep pushing and take pride in the small victories. You will be successful!
