Do you love English so much that you just can’t get enough? Do you want extra vocabulary practice outside of your class time? Are you crazy for games and challenges? Then you’re in the right place! Here are 6 apps to improve your English vocabulary that are sure to help any English language learner (or language lover!)
#1 Quizlet.com and App
Quizlet.com is great to make vocabulary flashcards that you can practice on your computer, smartphone, or tablet. It’s easy to make your own “study set” with words you want to practice. Pictures are automatically suggested for you, which is great if you’re a visual learner like me 🙂 Or if you’re an auditory learner, the website and app can even read the words out loud to you! But wait, there’s more! Quizlet offers other features like vocabulary quizzes, games, and shareable vocabulary “study sets” made by other Quizlet users. Want to get started? Here are a few links to pre-made flashcards to get you going: Car parts Study Set, Irregular Past Participles Study Set, and Phrasal Verbs Study Set.
#2 Memrise.com
Memrise.com is all about repetition, repetition, repetition! You enter a “course” and work your way through various levels by learning 5 words or phrases at a time. Memrise will keep bringing back words you previously learned to help them stick in your memory! Motivate yourself by setting daily goal and earning points! Here are a couple of Memrise “courses” that I recommend: 25 Common English Sayings, English Visual Dictionary, and 100 Most Common Words in English.
#3 and #4 FreeRice.com and BeanBeanBean.com
Here’s a cool English word you might not know: philanthropist. A philanthropist is a person who likes to help other people by donating to good causes. You can be a philanthropist on FreeRice.com and BeanBeanBean.com by simply answering English vocabulary questions. The money generated by the advertisements on the website is donated to good causes like the United Nations World Food Programme and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. Help yourself and help others at the same time by practicing English on these websites!
#5 Crossword Quiz App
This free app puts a fun twist on the classic crossword puzzle! You can pick puzzles from many categories like sports, fashion, video games, or pop culture. Then use pictures and word clues to help you fill in the words in the puzzle. Unlock new levels and categories by successfully completing crossword puzzles. This word game will have you learning new English vocabulary in no time!
#6. 4 Pics 1 Word App
Caution: This game is A-D-D-I-C-T-I-N-G! Just like the name of the app says, you are given four pictures, and you must guess the one word they represent using the letter tiles on the bottom of the screen. This is especially useful to learn those tricky English words that have more than one meaning. Feeling social? Challenge your friends to guess a difficult word by clicking on the Facebook or Whatsapp buttons on the side!
