Congratulations! You got admitted into an ESL program!
Now that you’re going abroad, it’s time to do some research about the ESL school environment you’re about to discover. You will be part of a new culture, so your findings could be extremely helpful. Keep in mind, it may take some time to get acclimated to your new surroundings, but it’ll surely be a rewarding experience.
So, where to start? We put together a quick guide to help you get acclimated with your new status as an international student. Let’s take a look!
Research About Your New School
Prior to your departure to your host country, you should check out the school’s website for detailed information. For instance, you need to figure out if your school will be far away from your new home and be prepared for any eventuality. As soon as you reach American soil, we advise you to schedule a campus tour and find out where exactly your classes will take place.
Additionally, we strongly suggest you download our Pre-Arrival Information Guide. It has a lot of details about what you need to prepare before leaving your home country and what you may encounter in the U.S.
Talk to Your International Student Advisor
A great way to get familiar with your ESL school environment is by talking to the Designated School Officer (DSO). They will provide guidance during this journey and can help you out with finding housing and handling administrative paperwork. He or she will explain the procedures you need to take into account so that you do not jeopardize your stay in America.
For instance, each time you go back to your home country, you will need to have your I-20 signed by your DSO. It is crucial you do it every time you leave the USA. Also, you cannot seek out employment while on an F-1 student visa.
Adjusting to a New Time Zone and Exploring your New Home
One of the most difficult parts about living abroad is adapting to a new time zone. It might take some time for your mind and body to get used to this new situation. Depending on where you traveled from, you might go through some sleepless nights due to jet lag. This is completely normal and you will eventually get used to the new time zone. Having said that, there are things you can do to speed up that process. For instance, you can work out in the early hours and you will notice a huge difference when you doze off.
Go out and explore your new city. You will be living in another country for a while, so you should start familiarizing yourself with the surroundings. It’ll also give you a good idea of the local lifestyle.
Have an Active Social Life
Whenever possible, meet new people and broaden your horizons. Most schools have clubs, organizations, and cultural centers you can join. Here at the Harvest English Institute we are constantly promoting new experiences and taking our students to fun field trips. Such activities have the benefit of helping you make friends who don’t necessarily speak your native language, forcing you to practice your English skills.
